Having worked in the food service industry for a number of years, our rule of thumb was to toss anything that was over 3 days old...but we were serving the public not our families, so the restrictions are tighter. If you don't like the chicken on its own and your parents continue to buy it, take the meat off the bones and use that to make chicken salad or enchiladas/quesadillas or soup with. It should be fine.
